In this article we demonstrate the formation of two-ion calcium crystals in a 7-tesla open-ring Penning trap for quantum metrology applications. We show the production of calcium ions in Paul-trap source located outside the superconducting solenoid, which are then transported through the magnetic field gradient and captured in-flight in the Penning trap. We also show the laser cooling of individual calcium ions in such a strong magnetic field with a focus on the cooling of the radial modes of motion.
